JUST HORSING AROUND!

This piece began as a response to the "Have Your Say" section on the British Broadcasting Corporation.

I deemed it interesting so I published on the notice board of The Black Think Tank.

Here is the original piece reproduced for your edification and enlightenment:

A story should be done examining how many believe the version of the shooting given by Vice President Cheney.

It is painfully, tragically obvious to me that the accidental shooting version of this incident is the best spin that could be put on this by the spin doctors.

That the delay in reporting the incident was to prevent a host of journalists and news reporters descending on the scene when the trail was hot and when the spin would have been taken out of the top of incompetence, callousness, immorality and corruption that pervades every policy and action of the Bush Administration.

One commentator has observed that the President's position vis-à-vis the wiretapping of American citizens was legally absurd.

I suggest that every policy, every initiative of the Bush Administration has been a flight of fantasy, a journey into the absurd.

Simply because President Bush is a spoiled child who has never had to see his wants and desires limited by the facts that together constitute the existing reality.

I received one reply from a contributor on The Black Think Tank, whom I will not identify but I will publish his comments because they are germane to the message I am trying to communicate:

Are you suggesting that this lawyer friend of the V.P. was shot on purpose? Were they on this hunting mission as a set up to kill this man? If so why a hunting trip with the V.P.? The easier way would have been just to hire someone to make it look like a set up!!! I believe that he did shoot him the way it has been reported. It is not as though this version of the story was favorable to Cheney.

As I considered this contribution to the dialogue that I am trying to initiate I was reminded of a promise that I made myself in an article I published on my web site on 28th July, entitled "Time For A Change" that contained the following:

I forgot again, even as I was writing this, I have resolved never to bandy words, or mince words ever again. I must cross ever t and dot every i.

I have broken this promise because of my deep concern about preserving the independence and personal autonomy of those with whom I am trying to communicate, but this is such an important issue and the response from the contributor creates such an apt analogy that I am going to cross ever t and dot every i in my response to him.

When I first began to analyze the perspective, actions and policies of the Bush Administration I was guilty of the same error as this contributor, I believed that they were much more devious and Machiavellian than they were capable of being. I believed that they invaded Iraq to gain control of that nation's oil.

Now, with the passage of events, I believe I have a much more realistic 'fix' on what moves these individuals, that far from being devious they are pathetic and absurd.

The American Heritage Dictionary contains this meaning of the word "absurd," Ridiculously incongruous or unreasonable.

That is what I deem the policies of the Bush Administration, I consider them to be consistently ridiculously incongruous or unreasonable.

This, I think, is a reflection of the personality of the President, and the best description of his personality is that he is a spoiled child.

He has always got whatever he wanted, so he believes that whatever he wants he will get. He got his wants and desires fulfilled because he was the son of a President. He got to attend an Ivy League College, not because he merited it, but because his father was the President.

His run in with the law was expunged from the public record, because his father was the President.

He never had to serve in Vietnam, but made a desultory attempt to fulfill his obligations to his country by serving in the Texas National Guard - because his father was the President.

He became Governor of Texas, and President of the USA, because of the political contacts of his father, who served in these posts before him.

He clearly came to the conclusion that reality would always change to accommodate his wishes.

How else can be explained a President and his advisers, in planning for war ignoring and denigrating the advice of the Chief of Staff of the Army?

How else can be explained that the Bush Administration perceived malice and not good sense in the opposition to the invasion of Iraq, mounted by some of the nation's closest allies, France and Germany?

How else can be explained the rush to initiate hostilities, without making sure that there was just and reasonable cause to take this most serious action, because in the long term if the reasons for going to war are found to be spurious, or even worst, contrived; this might seriously erode and destroy public support for the war and leave the troops in an invidious situation, leave them out on a limb, so to speak?

How could the Bush Administration in their talks with their closest ally, Great Britain, create the impression that a regime change was the objective, when disclosure of the contents of these talks could have such disastrous effects on confidence and credibility of the decision to go to war?

How else can be explained the failure to sign the Kyoto Convention on global warming, coming on the heels of the accusation that the findings of scientists had been diluted to made less potent this dread threat?

How else can be explained the incidents of torture of prisoners in the Abu Ghraib Prison in Iraq, the finding of the United Nations with regard to the treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba?

How else can be explained all these phenomena, unless with the conclusion that President Bush has the personality of a spoiled child?

Now, the picture of President Bush sitting in the classroom, dumbstruck, immovable, after having been told of the 911 catastrophe is easily understandable to me.

Now, I believe that the war in Iraq occurred because the hawks of the Administration believed that this was the reason why President Bush the elder, lost to Bill Clinton because he was perceived to be 'soft' for not precipitating a regime change in the first Gulf war, and they saw the election of President Bush as an opportunity to make up for that oversight.

I believe that if news reporters and journalist had descended on that small Texas town last Saturday night, they would have found the members of that hunting party in various stages of inebriation, that the shooting resulted from members of that party 'horsing around.'

I spent several summers of my youth shooting birds with a slingshot, I know that to hit a bird requires a moment to aim. I will never believe that a sober, sane, responsible individual could shoot another in the face accidentally - unless his victim was sitting on the branch of a tree obscured by foliage.

The Bush Administration is composed of bad, pathetic actors who must be bundled quietly off the world stage before they do further harm and create further embarrassment for themselves and the nation.

We have an Administration composed of individuals who are just horsing around - and no amount of spin can conceal that fact.
